I just played one SC 1P game for the first time this week-end just to have a look...

Very very interesting and i ended with a tactical victory.

However i experienced very heavy attacks from Japanese land-based attack planes i.e. G4M Bettys coming either from Rabaul or maybe Buin (i don't know, i did not have any means to know). It seems to be very difficult to do anything against these raids except CAPs since most of them do not have fighter escort. But they were really a lot... My concern is that at the beginning of the scenario, it is said that that the allied bases in New-Guinea have been removed because of the fighting against Rabaul. But Rabaul is here... and nothing to do against it...

So i think that part of these planes should be removed or Port-Moresby should be added and so would be Lae and/or Gasmata...
I should prefer the second option. Of course, more planes to deal with, more air operations but historically they was an interaction between New Guinea and Solomons operations. It was obvious for the Japanese that had to swing from one theater to another (e.g. Tainan Ku) but it was the same for the Allied that has to coordinate between McArthur's command (in New Guinea) and Nimitz command (in the Solomons) especially for the bombers like B17.

How about fewer planes in Rabaul instead?

This is a very difficult game for US in a 2P game cause the AI does not make the best use of her capital ships and long range bombers.

Yes, I've noticed this in several games too.

Example: Let say historically Rubal has 50 G4M bases in Rubal during the time of this battle. But because this game is only focused on Guadalcanal, the AI and real players use all 50 against Guadalcanal when in reality only half would have been used against Guadalcanal while the other half would have been use to support operation against Papua New Guenia.

So I agree with Larsenjp. To balance this out either include allied airfields in PNG or reduce Japanese bomber force to simulate a portion of the air force being used to support action against PNG. Don't forget to do this with fighters too.

Finding information on how the Japanese allocated their air power during this time would help provide a more accurate account on how many aircraft the IJN should use for this scenario.

Well i will try to find out some data but there is a lot of documentation to review.
Anyway, it seems evident that the IJN air forces were small and the 25th Air Flotilla's staff in Rabaul constantly had to switch from New Guinea to the Solomons and back depending on the priorities that were changing almost daily. Quite a hard job...
