Hello Bladerunner

It would be interesting to be able to select a inbound flight of attacking planes with your own fighter crews.
This would be different from the CAP.
But I don't see if the CAP is up why a group cannot break off to attack an attack squadron in the area.
Of course range would be very limited and would be based on their fuel available.

Thanks for listening, great to see the feedback from those really interested.

Sounds like intercept to me.

I cannot say for the developer, according to Flat Top Designer's Notes( http://grognard.com/info/FlatTopDesignersNotes.pdf ), there is a paragraph which seems to give an explanation to your idea, it goes like this:

"The restrictiveness of the rules for Air-to-Air Combat is based on historical fact. Combat is possible only in certain hexes, because on in those hexes would the planes converge into a small enough area to find each other and stage a battle. Although there were a few cases where fighters assigned as Escorts left their charges to attack enemy planes, these instances were few and far between."

I guess it may also apply to CAP.

FYI, please.

Ìt means your CAP will patrol over an hex and engage any strike passing by
Why not
Keep it mind that air strikes are moving on a hex grid and sometimes there could be more than possible hex moving them closer to their target. so your patrol may miss it interception

I had also consider an airstrike detaching some fighters against another airstrike in the same hex as it happened historically

Do you mean being able to select any hex on the map for your fighters to patrol, hoping a Japanese strike force passes through - bit like a distant CAP?  Nice idea; you could potentially put up a fighter screen on possible attack vectors.  However you'd need a lot of fighters to make this a feasible option.  And if they are protecting your airfields who will be looking after your bombers - interesting addition to the decision-making Smile
